Design in constant motion

The image shown above is a dye solar photovoltaic panel, the chemistry originally inspired by processes by which chlorophyl captures light and converts it into useful products. Use of coloured but functional dyes creates colourful transparent windows that generate electricity.

We explore new structures, methods of manufacture and material combinations, expanding iconic design themes from the past and pushing boundaries to create desirable objects of the future.

Inspired by nature

The natural world is full of incredible structures that inspire product design at Gemnz.

Take the silica chimney of the marine sponge, the Venus Flower Basket… spirally grooved to convert minute variations in pressure to upward flow, carrying food through the animal.

These animals are or particular interest to materials scientists since their optical and mechanical properties are in some ways superior to man-made materials.

Colour surrounds us

The images show a set of dyes made by BASF in the mid 19th century – at the time colour was revolutionary and this set the standard for textile dyes, paints and colour.

Also shown here is a close up of the scales of the Green Hairstreak butterfly, generating a beautiful sparkling green effect caused by light refraction off nanosized spirally wound molecules in the wing structure.

We combine real gem and decorative stones, coloured metals, ceramics, glass and exotic woods to achieve subtle texture by day and stunning stained glass effects by night.

Design evolution

Our designs evolve out of geometry defining nature and art, made physical by natural and advanced materials, made functional by integrated electronics.

Other functions

On the theme of constant innovation Gemnz is exploring a range materials structures which enable new effects.
Our novel carbon filled ceramic can be cast or printed into intricate shapes which can be made to heat up using low voltage electricity. Heat is primarily transmitted as “body absorbing” infrared heat made directional  by incorporation of parabolic reflectors into the structure
Gemnz heat-block technology, developed with sister company Hurd3, enables renewable power to be stored as heat with a minimum of expensive power conditioning.

Creating objects of desire

Lattice windows, wood, gem, stone and colour combinations are integrated into stand alone objects, things you wear and interiors.
