Practical matters

Individual products

Our hand made lamps capture the randomness and flaws reflected in the natural world locking together surface texture, patina, manufacturing imperfections and colour together with methods used for manufacture – no two lamps are identical

Items are manufactured in-house using materials from a variety of sources aiming for sustainability. None of the items listed contain materials which are registered under cites.

Surface finishes vary from flawless in the case of our copper range of lamps, to rustic “design with imperfections” for wood based structures.

The unique rippled surface and earth colour variation achieved on our ceramics is a design feature – we think this surface texture contributes to overall appearance and is unique to Gemnz.

Depending on the manufacturing process some of our ceramics contain trapped air bubbles, and small cracks which can show at the surface of castings as shown below. These have no effect on the stability of the finished product.

Character marks

In some lamps made of pine fitted with higher intensity lamps, light can be transmitted through the wood structure visible as a warm red/orange glow on the outer surface of the lamp. This does not effect the operation of the lamp.

In a similar manner, some stones are transparent or partially transparent to light and can come to life when illuminated.

Clicking through to our shop, you will see detailed descriptions of each lamp with pictures and accompanying description of surface finish, presence of bubbles and any other “character marks”.

Customers must satisfy themselves that surface finishes, colour variations and overall appearance including character marks as described against a listing, are acceptable prior to placing an order.

Lamps are designed to provide soft light, suitable for background ambience and waymarking rather than intensity for reading.

General use

Our lamps are strictly for indoor use unless specifically designated for outdoor use.

Lamps designed for indoor use must not be immersed in water or other liquids or stored or operated in a damp environment which will slowly damage electronics and the structure. Gemnz takes no responsibility for operation of our lamps in unsuitable locations.

Lamps use energy efficient light emitting diode lamps designed for a push fit G4 housing. Wattage depends on the lamp ranging between 3W for Drunken Brick Layer lamps for 6W for Diatom and Jaz lamps.

G4 LED’s have a typical design life of ~15,000-50,000 hrs depending on Wattage and usage cycles or 15-50 times longer than equivalent bulbs – but they will eventually need to be replaced.

Optional gem insert

Gemnz Diatom lamps include an optional gem insert.

While it is difficult to physically detach contained gemstones, stones will debond from the structure on repeated handing. This may cause a slight change to appearance in reflected opposed to refracted light. This flexible insert should be handled carefully to avoid damaging the structure – it is recommended that the insert is placed in position once only and not removed. Gemnz can rebuild the insert for a small charge. Please contact us for details.

Bulb replacement

Lamps are wired or transportable and rechargeable. Rechargeable lamps contain a compact Lithium Polymer battery with integrated protection against overcharging. LiPo is used because the energy density enables a recharge function to be integrated into a small package. Typically LiPo batteries maintain their design capacity for 300-500 charge/discharge cycles, after which capacity can drop significantly. Battery life can be maximised by avoiding overcharging, over-discharging, exposing the battery to extreme temperatures, or physical damage.

Once a battery has reached its end of life, the lamps will continue to function on mains power, but will not be rechargeable.

Our lamps are designed to last so far as current technology enables, but at end of life, the LiPo battery should not be placed in general waste but must be disposed of in a safe manner. Gemnz provides a battery replacement service (dependent on the specific lamp) for a small charge.

With the exception of changing a bulb, Gemnz takes no responsibility for customer attempts to modify, repair or take apart a lamp.
